Sossion issues teachers strike notice for September 1

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has issued a strike notice for September 1.

According to Sossion, teachers will oppose disagreeable policies being fronted by their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Speaking to KNUT members in Borabu, Nyamira, Sossion demanded that the employer end transfer of teachers among other policies that he claims are demoralizing tutors.

They are also against a recommendation to edge out boarding schools in the wake of unrest in learning institutions across the country.

Sossion also wants the TSC to scrap the new system of promoting teachers using performance contracts.

During previous talks with the Labour Ministry, Sossion noted that over 30,000 teachers with higher education qualifications have been overlooked since 2014.

KNUT National Treasurer John Matiangi echoed similar sentiments adding claims that the planned roll out of similar school uniforms for students across the country is another scandal in the offing.

Earlier in the month, the Kenya Parents Association (KPA) had proposed that all schools wear the same color for easy identification and to protect parents from exploitation.

Education PS Belio Kipsang has since taken up the issue saying the ministry is in talks with stakeholders.
