Senior Kenyatta National Hospital doctor succumbs to COVID-19

A senior doctor at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Dr. Anthony Were has died from COVID-19 complications.

Dr. Were, a nephrologist, is said to have been in Intensive Care Unit, for more than two weeks before succumbing.

He was a consultant at the Kenyatta National Hospital and a senior doctor, as well as the immediate former head of the renal unit at the institution.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Chibanzi Mwachonda eulogised the deceased as a teacher, mentor and leader in nephrology, saying he was the president of the African Association of Nephrology and the deputy director of the East African kidney institute.

“14 days ago you asked us to pray for you, as you got re-admitted to ICU due to COVID-19 complications. We wake up to the heartbreaking & devastating news of your demise. A teacher, mentor & leader in nephrology. Your ultimate reward lies with the Almighty. Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends & colleagues in the profession,” said Dr. Mwachonda.

This comes after the death of five other senior medical specialists over the last one week.

On Friday last week, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union announced the deaths of Dr. Emarah Ashraf, Dr. Vladimir Schukin, Dr. Hudson Inyangala, Dr. Robert Ayisi and Dr. Hudson Alumera, a periodontal surgeon.

“KMPDU urges all doctors to abstain from duties where the work environment is unsafe. National and County Governments must bear the cost of treatment for COVID-19 for all frontine health care workers and the public,” said the union last Friday.
