Second suspect in Tob Cohen murder case wants court to release him

The second suspect in the murder of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen has now asked the court to release him on bail pending hearing and determination of the case.

Peter Karanja, in an application presented in court on Thursday, said he has been in police custody for over 30 days and if released on bail he is willing and able to abide by any terms and conditions set by the court.

“I was on various days taken from custody at Kiambu and taken to DCI headquarters under the guise of interrogations and questioned in the wee hours of the night running up to 2am,” read the application.

“I believe this is not right and was only meant to physically and mentally torture me for purposes of obtaining information which I clearly could not provide.”

The court ruled that the application will be heard on Tuesday next week to allow the victim’s family file their responses.

However, the family of Tob Cohen has since indicated that it will oppose the application.

Justice Daniel Ogembo also directed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to prepare a report on the condition of the accused.

Mr. Kariuki has pleaded not guilty to the charge of killing the businessman and his case is yet to be consolidated with that of the deceased’s wife Sarah Wairimu Cohen who was released on a cash bail of Ksh.2 million.
