Royal Media Services journalist attacked by neighbour over land dispute

A Royal Media Services (RMS) journalist stationed in Bungoma County was on Monday evening attacked by a neighbour over a land squabble.

Kaitano Nyongesa, who reports for Radio Citizen and Sulwe FM, was accosted by the man identified as Mark while cutting napier grass for his cows at Makunga area in Tongaren constituency, Bungoma County.

According to Kaitano, he bought the one-hectare piece of land two years ago from a widow.

Mark, who reportedly lives with the widow Kaitano bought the piece of land from, snatched the panga from the scribe was using to cut grass and attack him with it.

Kaitano sustained serious injuries on the neck, hands, shoulder, chest, and stomach, and was rushed to Naitiri hospital by neighbours and family members who came to his rescue.

He was then referred to the Webuye County Referral Hospital for further treatment.

The neighbours with the help of the local chief then arrested the man and handed him to the Mbakalu Police Station where he is presently being detained.

Kaitano said he had come from his media job and went to look for grass for his animals in his land before Mark showed up and began to harass him.

“He confronted me and told me to go and remove the sisal that had been planted at the boundaries. When I refused, he pounced on me with kicks and blows before taking the panga from me and attacking me with it,” he said.

The journalist further added that the man told him that he wanted him dead so that he can reclaim the piece of land on which he now stays.

He appealed to Bungoma County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti to probe the incident.
