Requiem mass held for the late Cyrus Omondi Gearbox

A requiem mass for Kahawa Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi alias Gearbox took place on Wednesday in Nairobi.

The body was taken to St Joseph Catholic Church at around 10:30am under police escort.

Boda boda operators honked their horns in honor of the deceased as sounds of wailing rent the air.

Members of the public were allocated one hour to view the body.

Omondi, who was elected on a Jubilee party ticket in Kiambu County in 2017, died while on official trip in India.

The body was discovered inside his hotel room on February 12.

Four days later, the body was flown back to Kenya with leaders calling for investigations into the MCA’s untimely demise.

There was drama at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi as distraught mourners clamored to be allowed in to view the body.

It was only after the mother arrived and viewed the body that the mourners were given access.

However, the viewing was disrupted after some of the MCA’s supporters clashed on the cause of death.

According to the Daily Nation, it was only after Kiambu Governor James Nyoro intervened that calm was restored.

He told them that investigations are ongoing and they should leave it to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to determine what caused the death.

Nyoro later visited the MCA’s home in Kiambu County together with Siaya Senator James Orengo, Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi and other leaders to condole with the family.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto sent messages of condolence with the latter describing the MCA as a “dedicated servant to his people and the Jubilee Party.”

On his part, Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura termed the late Omondi as “a great man indeed who overcame so many odds to be an MCA in a predominantly Kikuyu constituency, Omondi stood firm for Kiambu people.”

The deceased MCA will be laid to rest at his home in Masat village, Ukwala, Siaya County on Friday.
