Reprieve for Kasarani residents as KURA to start repairing road

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has said the Kasarani road that led to protests will be repaired immediately.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, the Senator expressed his dismay over the chaos that marred transport operations on the Kasarani-Mwiki- Njiru road.

“We shall not have an state of anarchy in Nairobi, the formula for getting our roads done is not through chaos,” Sakaja said.

He emphasized that the best way to seek redress is through consultation with the relevant authorities.

He however tried to appease the residents saying that an agreement had been reached with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) for a contractor to be on the site within the hour to commence repair works.

He further expressed confidence that normal public transport operations would resume on the route by Thursday afternoon.

Residents however said they would not stop their protests until they see the repair works begin.

Cyrus Kinoti, Director General at KURA, said they are aware of the poor state of roads in Nairobi and other towns and repairs would begin as soon as the rains cease.

He said Ksh.1.7billion had already been set aside for the same.

Residents of Mwiki, Kasarani and Njiru endured a week of intense chaos that saw public transportation in the area come to a halt.

Angry residents accused the government of neglect and barricaded the road with stones, lit bonfires and engaged anti-riot police in running batttles.

The stalemate saw thousands of area residents forced to use other routes while some had to walk for many kilometers to access means of transport.
