Raila and Uhuru set for China visit to seek Ksh.368B SGR loan

African Union envoy Raila Odinga will accompany President Uhuru Kenyatta to China next week to seek funds for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu.

According to Mr. Odinga, they are optimistic that the Chinese Government will give Kenya Ksh.368billion loan from China to Kenyan government.

Speaking in Nyakach sub county on Saturday, the AU envoy said the funding will will also help revive the Kisumu inland port that slumped following the collapse of the railway transport.

He said the new SGR line will extend from Naivasha to Narok, Bomet, Sondu and finally Kisumu.

In addition, the completion of the SGR will have a huge impact on the economy of Kisumu and its environs, Mr. Odinga added.

He also noted that special economic zones will be established in Kisumu to make Kisumu City the hub of East Africa.

It is expected that the project will provide more employment opportunities for Kenyans who live and work in the region.
