President Kenyatta set to meet National Assembly, Senate leadership

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to meet the leadership of both Houses of Parliament on Saturday.

Although details on the agenda of the meeting remain scanty as at the moment, sources say it will majorly border around the much anticipated Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

The leadership of the House has continued to play hide and seek on the agenda of the meeting, with Senate Majority Leader Irungu Kang’ata only saying the President wants to express his appreciation on the work done so far by the Senate.

“The government is happy with the good work done by Senate in the last four months; we have processed a record 10 Bills including County Attorney Bill, County Revenue Appropriation Bill, and County Government Amendment Bill,” he said.

“We have entered into a historical deal where counties will get an extra Ksh.50 billion. I expect that we will discuss how to ensure government business flows in the House without a hitch.”

Reached for comment, National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi said “it’s just going to be chit chat with the new leadership of the House.”

Mbadi said the Speaker agreed with the President that he was going to meet the new leadership including Chairpersons and Vice Chairpersons to formulate and drive the government’s legislative agenda.

“BBI can come anytime; chances are that we may need to be ready for it so he can talk to us about it but that’s not the main thing at least by the information I have,” added the Suba South MP.

The meeting comes on the backdrop of an advisory by Chief Justice David Maraga for President Kenyatta to dissolve Parliament; an advisory the Head of State recently said he is not keen on implementing.

Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu has since already constituted a five-judge bench to listen and determine cases filed against the advisory.
