Photos: State of General Election in polling stations across Kenya
In estates across Nairobi and in the
most interior villages, sounds of vuvuzela’s were reported from as early as 2
am. The noise was a wakeup call to rally voters to get out of their beds, head
to their polling stations to partake in the August 9 General Election.
Kenyans have been flocking polling
stations across the country, and at 6.00 am, when IEBC officials opened polling
stations, there were long queues with voters armed with their ID cards.
Among the early risers were Presidential Candidate William Ruto, who was the first person to cast a vote in Kosachei
Primary School in Sugoi.
Azimio la Umoja’s deputy presidential candidate Martha Karua was also among the early birds at Gichugu Primary School
where she cast her vote.
As at 8.00 am Kenya Kwanza running mate Rigathi Gachagua and Agano Party Presidential Candidate David Mwaure had also cast their votes in Sagana Primary School and Upper Hill Secondary School, respectively.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and his mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta later cast their vote at Mutomo Primary School in Gatundu South Constituency.
A contingent of GSU officers were seen at the polling station ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta's arrival to vote.
Other voters could be seen walking into polling stations, being successfully identified by IEBC officials and placing their votes in ballot boxes lined up in the centres.
However,
the D-day has also been marred by challenges of unpreparedness by IEBC officials,
technology failure in the use of KIEMS kits, and also scuffles in polling
stations.
In Westlands Constituency, voters at the Westlands Primary School polling station became restless after the voting process delayed by over 1 hour.
At 8.00 am, voting had not kicked of at
Indangalasia Primary school in Matungu Constituency, where Presidential
candidate Prof. George Wajackoyah is expected to cast his vote.
Ballot papers and boxes for the Parliamentary
seat were reported missing at Mercy Njeri Primary school, in Rongai Constituency
minutes before 8.00 AM. This resulted to an indefinite suspension of the Parliamentary election.
At 7.30 AM, the voting process was at a standstill in Dabasso Primary, Kilifi County after KIEMS kits failed to work. Also, the process had not kicked off in ICF polling station in Eldas Constituency since the station had not been opened.
Three people have also been arrested and locked at Kinamba Police station in Ngarua Division for allegedly spreading hate leaflets.
