Outspan Hospital releases body detained over Ksh.1.6M bill after Citizen TV coverage

The family of Beatrice Wanjiru, whose body had been detained by Outspan Hospital for close to 60 days over unpaid hospital bills amounting to Ksh.1.6 million, can now bury their kin after the facility granted them a waiver, two weeks after Citizen TV highlighted their plight.

At the hospital’s morgue in Nyeri town on Wednesday, emotions ran high as family members and friends converged to receive the body of their loved one for burial, close to two months after her demise due to lung cancer.

They sang in celebration at the realisation that they can finally bury their kin, with many expressing gratitude that the wait for the funeral was finally over.

The reality of death kicking in, despite the relief of having the burden of the bill removed.

Early this month, Citizen TV and Citizen Digital ran the story of how the family from Kiambagathi, Kirinyaga County was unable to bury their loved one a month after her death over a huge hospital bill that saw her body detained at the Outspan Hospital morgue.

The hospital said then that the family owed Ksh.1.3 million and that the body would remain at the morgue until the situation is resolved.

“We acknowledge we have the body, but we are waiting for the family to come and engage with us because the last engagement we had with them was on 12th of January,” said Jeff Mungai, the hospital’s medical superintendent.
