Siaya MPs demand lifestyle audit on Governor Rasanga
Gem Lawmaker Jakoyo Midiwo and his Rarieda counterpart Nicholas Gumbo now want the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to conduct a lifestyle audit on Siaya County Governor Cornel Rasanga over allegations of misappropriation of public funds.
According to the lawmakers, Rasanga’s lifestyle has changed to a more luxurious one ever since he was elected as governor back in 2013, something they attribute to the embezzlement of public funds meant for development of Siaya County.
Gumbo, who is also the chairperson of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC), apologized to the people of Siaya for convincing them to vote in Governor Rasanga in 2013 as he has failed to deliver what he promised Siaya people.
“Just like in National Government, corruption is worse in county level. Anybody telling us to vote back Governor Rasanga must explain to us how this man who had nothing four years ago, today boasts of hundreds of millions of shillings and lives in a palatial home, where did he get the money from?” said Gumbo, who is also eying the Siaya gubernatorial race.
Parliament’s Minority Leader, Jakoyo Midiwo, accused the governor of buying palatial homes in Kisumu and Siaya Counties and even the USA.
“When we talk about the menace of corruption in the National Government, we will not keep quiet on Siaya County corruption,” said Midiwo.
However, Governor Rasanga has played down the MPs allegations, clarifying that he was holding an even much highier national office before 2013 that is his source of wealth.
Governor Rasanga said that his lifestyle has not changed a bit as he had well-earned money before he entered politics.
“This is a witch-hunt by the MPs because they wanted to benefit from County public funds and I declined. If a lifestyle audit is conducted, then all of the elected leaders in Siaya should be investigated too,” added the governor.
