Nyandarua Woman Rep slams wa Muchomba over polygamy remarks

Nyandarua Women Representative Faith Gitau has condemned her Kiambu counterpart Gathoni wa Muchomba’s controversial statements regarding polygamy.

Gitau’s remarks come barely a week after Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Mushomba publicly said that men from Mount Kenya region should be allowed to be polygamous so as to increase birth rates in the region.

“We give birth to these children and we do not want to own up to them. If you are a man from the Kikuyu community and you can sustain five wives, have them, and if you are a man and you are in a position to bring up many children, do it,” wa Muchomba had said.

Speaking during a church dedication function at ACK Good Shepherd, Ol Kalou, the legislator termed the act of marrying more than one wife as ungodly, adding that wa Muchomba’s stand was her own and not that of the entire community.

“The Bible says a man shall leave his mother and mother and be joined to his wife… Is there an ‘s’ there? The one who spoke is Gathoni wa Muchoba and that is her personal stand not the position of all other leaders or the entire community,” said Gitau.

The legislator further denounced the opinion that a man should marry many wives, saying such a man would be incapable of equally loving all the women and, as a result, all the children, in such a marriage setting.

“I, as Faith Wairimu wa Gitau, denounce that position that men marry several wives. We would also like to be loved and there is no way a man can love four women the same way. It could even be hard for such a person to love all those children and take care of them,” she added.

“We cannot leave contrary to God’s wish and follow other religions that allow marriage of up to four wives. Our Constitution is the Bible and we will not go against it.”
