Njoro clashes: 3 dead, six in hospital with arrows lodged in them

Three people were killed dead and 6 others seriously injured after tribal clashes erupted at Nessuit in Nakuru’s Njoro sub-county.

This comes just few weeks after a warning was issued to those encroaching on Mau Forest.

Reports indicate that clashes between two warring communities caused tension after several people were shot with arrows.

Those injured are currently at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital awaiting surgery to dislodge the steel arrowheads still stuck in their bodies hours later.

One of them who was shot in the head also had the arrow still lodged in his skull while another two had the weapons stuck on their backs.

The fourth man had an arrow stuck on his leg while the fifth victim bore cuts on his head suspected to have been inflicted using machetes (pangas).

Meanwhile, more than ten houses were razed in a suspected retaliatory attack in Ndosua and Sigaon villages of Nessuit on Wednesday night.

This follows the clashes between two communities that have been linked to the ongoing Mau Forest evictions.

There was heavy police presence on the ground with most businesses remaining closed.

National administration officers are expected to hold a peace baraza (meeting) later on Thursday.

Leaders drawn from the affected areas called on the residents to restore peace and prevent recurrence of the 2007 clashes.

Zachariah Kahiro (Njoro Ward), MCA George Kiere (Kihingo Ward), Philip Rotich (Mauche Ward) and Jackson Githua (Mau Narok MCA) also urged residents to adhere to the government directive on the Mau Forest.

Speaking at Biston Trading Center in Njoro Sub-County, the leaders pleaded with the national government to increase police patrols in a bid to prevent further attacks.
