Nine Kisumu County Askaris to be charged for dragging woman on tarmac road

Nine Kisumu County Government Askaris suspected to have been behind the humiliation of a city trader are set to be arraigned at the Kisumu Law Courts Friday morning.

The nine enforcement officers are accused of causing bodily harm on Beatrice Magolo after they dragged her by a vehicle on tarmac road.

County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu says the 9 suspects spent the night at the Kisumu Central Police Station and will be charged today.

Anampiu says the nine will be charged with assaulting the hawker, he says the city vehicle has also been detained at the station.

The woman sustained injuries during the incident which raised uproar among residents and the country at large leading to condemnation.

The nine are Victor Odiyo Ochieng, Kevin Omondi, George Nyonje, Faith Akoth, Paul Ochieng, Martin Olwa, Japheth Odero, Vincent Okeyo and Josephat Rowa.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said he was saddened and shocked following the arrest and mishandling of the trader by the city’s enforcement officers.

“As investigations continue on this matter with the urgency it deserves, I have directed the City Manager to immediately SUSPEND FROM DUTY all the Officers who were involved in this incident with immediate effect, until the conclusion of the on-going probe on the matter,” he said in a statement.

The Governor stated that all County enforcement officers must carry out their duties while fully respecting human rights of wananchi.
