Keep politics out of my work, Magoha tells off politicians over NEMIS

The government has sought to reassure Kenyan learners and parents that the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) is still working and has in fact been upgraded.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha made the announcement on Wednesday during the release of the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

CS Magoha rubbished reports on local dailies claiming that his ministry had abandoned the NEMIS system, saying those were the works of malicious politicians.

“I am not a politician and I have no desire to be one. By the grace of God, I am a technocrat, the weakness I have is that I’m just a worker. So keep politics out of my work, because I have no sympathies for people who try to politicize what I’m doing,” said the tough-talking CS.

“NEMIS is here to stay. And, as a matter of fact, at the time some busybodies were saying that we have cancelled NEMIS, we were actually strengthening NEMIS. And I want to announce to you today that we have successfully upgraded NEMIS on a 10G card.”

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia, on her part, stated that 10,000 intern teachers would be posted to schools in January to deal with the current shortage.

She added that this would also be in line with the government’s initiative of 100% transition of students from primary to secondary schools.

Ms. Macharia further stated that the commission has started a training exercise for 106,320 teachers in preparation for the Curriculum-Based Establishment (CBE) Grade 4 roll-out in January.

“Overall, in this year’s national exams, we recorded the least number of reported cases of teachers accused of engaging in irregularities,” she said.

“I also wish to caution proprietors of private schools against recruiting staff who are not registered with TSC.”
