NCIC names ex-Governor Sonko, MPs Ngeno, Arati & Osoro in list of shame

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has named ousted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko alongside MPs Simba Arati (Dagoretti North), Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango) and Johana Ng’eno (Emurua Dikir) in its inaugural list of shame over politically instigated violence.

NCIC Chairman Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, in a press address on Wednesday, said the commission shall henceforth publish the names of politicians and citizens whose words or conduct may undermine peace and harmony pursuant to the NCI Act 2008.

Dr. Kobia also added, that in the same breath, the commission will also publish an alternate list of fame for those whose actions are commendable, naming such persons as Mohamed Abdikhaim Osman (MP Fafi) and Charity Gathambi (MP Njoro) in its debut list.

The commission expressed great concern at increasing political temperature in the country with with over 15 months to the next General Elections, further condemning the violence recently witnessed in Burma Market, Githurai, and the funeral in Kisii where MPs Arati and Osoro fought in public.

“In the recent past, we have noted with concern, political factions, especially from Kieleweke and TangaTanga, engaging in vicious and selfish rhetoric. We are saddened by acts of violence and negative political rhetoric by some politicians and their followers,” said Dr. Kobia.

“We condemn the toxicity of these baseless acts and take this early opportunity to remind politicians witnessed fighting and insulting each other in public, that this is an insult to Kenyans who voted for you!”

He added: “We hereby call the youth to resist being recruited by politicians as goons and warn them that they shall be held accountable to their violent actions. The goons cannot hide in an anonymity! We shall go for them; you can run but not hide. Those who are using the vulnerable youth, we are watching you.”

The NCIC Chairman also warned those propagating hate speech and incitement to violence on social media that any form of hate speech will not be condoned saying there exists sophisticated technology that will fish them out.

He stated that the commission is presently working with the IEBC, EACC, Registrar of Political Parties, DPP and DCI in dealing with propagators of violence who are undermining cohesion, harmony and peace in the country.
