NASA calls off Tuesday anti-IEBC demos

The National Super Alliance has called off anti-IEBC protests scheduled for Tuesday (today), October 17 to condole with the victims of the previous demonstrations.

In a statement issued Monday evening, NASA leader Raila Odinga’s spokesman Dennis Onyango said the protests would resume on Wednesday.

“This is a temporary step to enable the coalition to attend to the supporters who were brutalized and hurt and families that lost loved ones today after police and State-protected goons descended on protesters and NASA leaders.

“The protests will resume on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 nationwide. The coalition directs all its supporters to stay off the streets tomorrow and resume Wednesday,” the statement read.

NASA further condemned the police for the alleged use of deadly force against its supporters who have been taking to the streets to push for reforms at the electoral commission before the repeat presidential election ordered by the Supreme Court is conducted.

On Monday, October 16, a Form Four student was shot and killed during anti-IEBC protests in Kisumu.

A two-year-old girl was also left with a bullet lodged in the shoulder near her neck after she was shot as police repulsed demonstrators. The girl was reportedly playing near their home when the live bullet hit her.

NASA is now appealing to human rights organizations to “take keen interest in the atrocities being committed against its supporters across the country and provide necessary support to victims in addition to taking actions commensurate with the crimes.”

With only nine days to the October 26 election day, the opposition has vowed to continue with daily protests under the campaign “No reforms No elections.”
