Nairobi West heist suspects freed on bond as Ombeta claims torture

Six suspects including three police officers in the Nairobi West heist have been released on Ksh.1 million bond.

Magistrate Andayi declined an application to deny them bail saying the reasons given by the Prosecution were not compelling or satisfactory.

The Prosecution had opposed bail saying:

“There are other suspects at large who are evading arrests and apprehensive that the accused before the court are likely to interfere with investigations.”

The court heard that the accused persons were arrested on different dates therefore investigations are not complete and the exhibits are yet to be found by the police.

“The exhibit is actually money…The accused were arrested away from their known fixed aboard and therefore might abscond court,” the Prosecution said.

The suspects had appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi on Wednesday and were charged with robbery with violence.

They were also charged with destroying property valued at over Ksh.1 million that belonged to G4S.

They pleaded not guilty.

Their lawyer Cliff Ombeta told the court that it was not safe for his clients to be in custody.

One of the accused persons also displayed injuries he alleged were caused by police after his arrest.

“The 2nd, 4th and 5th accused persons were even suffocated using plastic bags … the 6th accused person was taken near Windsor where he was tortured,” Ombeta claimed.

The court directed that the accused persons deposit their passports in court.
