NACADA nabs 750 litres of Ethanol, 40 drums seized in Ruaka
The crackdown, which was conducted in collaboration with officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the National Police Service (NPS), also led to the seizure of 40 drums said to have a capacity of storing about 250 litres of ethanol.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, NACADA believes that the empty drums contained ethanol which has already been ferried for illegal consumption.
"Drinking this type of alcohol is risky to health and could have dangerous consequences. Counterfeit or illegally produced alcohol can lead to blindness, and even death," read part of the statement.
The anti-drug authority has further vowed to heighten the crackdown on the consumption of illegal products, asserting that anyone found culpable will face the law.
Members of the public have also been urged to report any illegal, manufacturing, distribution, or sale of any suspicious alcohol and other forms of drugs to the authorities through toll-free line 1192.
This comes a few days after 10 people died and five others went blind after consuming illicit liquor at a bar in Kangai village, Mwea, Kirinyaga County.
Six family members are said to have died on Tuesday with five others going blind after consuming the substance.
Four other people later succumbed while undergoing treatment at local hospitals in the county.
The suspected bar owner, John Muriithi Karaya alias ‘California’, has already been apprehended and will be detained for 20 days pending the conclusion of investigations.
