MPs push for CS Sicily Kariukis impeachment over NYS scandal

A section of Members of Parliament now want Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki impeached over the Ksh.9 billion National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.

The lawmakers drawn from across the political divide claim CS Kariuki was in charge of the NYS docket when the fraudulent procurement deals that led to loss of millions of taxpayers money happened.

“Sicily Kariuki should take responsibility and just step aside… She was the Minister then. She actually needs to join her colleagues at lang’ata Women’s prison. Lilian Omollo was the Principal Secretary in the Ministry and she is behind bars,” said South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro.

They accused investigating agencies of conducting selective investigations for failing to probe CS Kariuki whom they claim could be having vital information to help recover the lost funds.

“If you want to end corruption in NYS and recover the Ksh.9 billion, Sicily Kariuki must go,” said Butere MP Tindi Mwale.

The MPs vowed to push for the impeachment and prosecution of CS Kariuki.

“We are going to use parliament, collect enough signatures and have her out by all means but she mujst be tried. She was the minister then,” said Osoro.

Ms. Kariuki was the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Gender and Youth before she was moved to the Health docket in January this year. The NYS docket was moved to the Public Service Ministry after the previous Ksh.791 million scandal.

Forty-three suspects including Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Lillian Omolo and NYS Director General Richard Ndubai were arrested and charged over the scandal.

Anti-Corruption court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti denied the 43 suspects bail noting that they are charged with Economic Crimes which are serious offences.

The suspects will remain in remand until their case is heard and determined.
