Mother of Class One murder, defilement victim speaks out

The mother of the 6-year-old child who was brutally raped and murdered last week in Kabironi, Kirinyaga County has called on the government to prosecute the 15-year-old responsible for the violent act to the full extent of the law.

Narrating the happenings around her daughter’s disappearance and subsequent murder, Margaret Murimi, revealed that her child, who was joining Class One on the day she went missing, was very excited to go to primary school.

On 4th January, Murimi says her child’s dream came true: “Last Monday I asked mother to admit my baby; she was meant to start Class One. Mum completed the process and even came home with the invoice from the school.”

What was a happy milestone soon turned into a nightmare when Murimi was informed, through a phone call, that her daughter failed to come home with the other Kabironi Primary School students.

Concerned, the family searched for the young girl.

“We looked for her from 5:00pm to 10:00pm that night, and one of the schoolteachers helped us. The next morning, we went to the school to find out what happened, but the administration did not help us,” says the grief-stricken mother.

The search yielded no fruit, and the family reported the case to Kirinyaga Police Station. Officers launched an investigation into the disappearance, but Murimi didn’t get information about her child’s case until Sunday.

“On Sunday, I got a phone call informing me that my baby’s body was found in our neighbour’s farm. They said that she had been raped and murdered brutally,” she recalled amid tears.

A 15-year-old from the Kabironi area copped up to the crime, and police have him in custody at Kirinyaga Police station.

Murimi called for justice, adding that the 15-year-old is a danger to other children in the community: “I would like to ask the government to take stern action on this boy. He has not only done this to my baby, but there are reports that he has abused other people’s children too.”

Protests over ‘rampant’ sex abuse

Over 1000 residents of Kabironi, Kirinyaga County held a demonstration on Tuesday to protest the defilement and brutal murder of the 6-year-old girl.

The irate residents decried the increasing cases of rape and defilement in the area, blaming the chiefs and their assistants of inaction when such cases are brought before them.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the residents called on the police and courts to ensure that the teen who confessed to the gruesome attack pays for his crime.

“As residents we are enraged about that boy’s actions. The police should take stern action on him. As mothers, we are extremely grieved by this incident. How does someone kill our children and dump them like that?” asked one mother.

Another resident said that the 15-year-old had a history of criminal behavior, adding that he was kicked out for school for stealing.

“We used to find that supplies such as sugar, rice and oil were missing from the school store, but we never knew who was behind the theft. One Sunday we caught him red handed with the stolen food,” reported the school worker.

When asked why he stole from the school, the teenager reportedly blamed his parents saying they ordered him to bring food home, telling him they did not care if he had to steal to get it.

The school worker asked the government to take stern action on the boy, saying that the discipline he gets would act as a deterrent to others.

Some of the angry residents razed down the culprit’s family home.
