MoH orders NCCG to clean, sanitize the area around Stima Plaza after trash-dumping drama

During a visit to the affected area, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni criticized the county’s public health department for failing to intervene earlier.

The Ministry of Health has issued a directive to the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) to immediately clean and sanitize the area around Stima Plaza, following disruptions that have significantly impacted local businesses.

The ministry’s demand comes amid rising concerns that many enterprises not involved in the ongoing scuffle have been unfairly affected.

During a visit to the affected area, Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni criticized the county’s public health department for failing to intervene earlier.

She called for an immediate investigation into the situation, citing potential health risks caused by the sewerage blockage at Stima Plaza and the Aga Khan Walk branch, as well as the illegal dumping of garbage at the Kenya Power headquarters.

According to PS Muthoni, these acts may have already led to infections in the area.

"We demand that all investigative bodies work swiftly to get to the bottom of this matter," said PS Muthoni. She emphasized the urgency of restoring normalcy and protecting public health.

The dramatic incident has sparked widespread criticism from Kenyans and political figures alike.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko weighed in on the controversy, suggesting that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja should have pursued a more diplomatic approach by engaging Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) CEO in formal discussions to resolve the county’s grievances.

The longstanding dispute traces back to 2007, when Kenya Power contested NCCG’s legal authority to impose wayleave fees.

Tensions escalated further in June 2023, when Kenya Power announced its plan to introduce Special Utility Poles for internet services.

NCCG claimed that the company was expanding its commercial operations while continuing to avoid paying the mandated wayleave fees.
