Matungu by-election to be held on March 4 next year, IEBC says

The Matungu Constituency by-election has been slated for March 4 next year, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said each political party intending to participate in the by-elections is to submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before December 21, 2020.

“The Commission shall publish, in the Gazette, the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary within seven days of receipt of the names of the candidates,” he said in a gazette notice.

Chebukati further noted that candidates intending to participate in the by-elections as independent candidates shall not have been members of any political party at least three months immediately before the date of the by-election.

In addition, political parties intending to present candidates in this election through direct nominations shall submit the list of persons nominated to contest in this election to the Commission on or before January 4, 2021.

The days for the nomination of political party candidates and independent candidates for the by-elections will be January 11 to 12, 2021.

Nomination papers are to be delivered by the candidates to the respective Returning Officer between 8am and 1pm and between 2pm and 4pm at the place designated by the IEBC.

Disputes relating to or arising from nominations are to be determined within 10 days of the lodging of the dispute with the commission in any event not later than January 22, 2021.

The campaign period for purposes of the scheduled by-elections is to commence on January 11, 2021 and cease on March 1, 2021 being 48 hours before the by-election day. Campaign time will run from 7a.m. to 6p.m for the said period.

“The registration and revision of the register of voters for the said electoral areas is suspended until March 18, 2021,” the Gazette notice reads.

The Matungu MP seat fell vacant following the death of Justus Murunga died on November 15.

Other by-elections that will be held on January 4 include those for members of county assemblies from Huruma Ward (Uasin Gishu); Hell’s Gate Ward (Nakuru); London Ward (Nakuru); Kiamokama Ward (Kisii) and Kitise/Kithuku Ward (Makueni).
