Matiangi says politicians behind emergence of criminal gangs

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday linked the resurgence of criminal gangs to political mobilization.

Speaking at the opening of Kagwathi Police Station in Tetu, Nyeri County, Matiang’i warned that the government will not tolerate the return of criminal gangs in the county.

He pointed out the return of criminal gangs in the area which he says are politically mobilized.

He called upon security personnel in the area to be on the lookout especially on radicalization matters that are becoming a problem and to curb dens brewing illicit drinks.

“We will be firm in matters security and tell those political leaders to allow us carry out our security mandate,” said Matiang’i.

Matiang’i, who was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, said the government is also aware of a growing radicalisation problem.

He called upon leaders in the area led by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who was also present, to ensure projects are done efficiently and to completion.

Governor Kahiga backed the call to tighten security in the area adding that innocent lives are being lost as a result of insecurity.
