Makueni police boss Francis Gichui transferred days after officer Nancy Njeri was arrested

Makueni police boss Francis Gichui has been transferred days after an officer from his station was linked to the death of lawyer Onesmus Masaku.

On Tuesday, Makueni residents threatened to interrupt Mashujaa Day celebrations demanding Gichui’s transfer.

They accused the police boss of trying to protect the officer Nancy Njeri who is set to face murder charges.

Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim however assured them that the law will not be applied selectively.

Lawyer Masaku died at the Kenyatta National Hospital where he had been receiving treatment after his hands were slashed two weeks ago.

Njeri, who had been stationed at Makueni Police Station in Wote, is accused of slashing his hands with a machete on October 7, 2020.

It is alleged that the two had an altercation at the lawyer’s house before the incident occurred.

Following her arrest, there were claims that the police were trying to cover up the matter to protect their colleague.

Two days later, Njeri was arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate Caroline Ocharo at the Machakos Court.

When asked why the case was not presented before a Makueni court, the prosecutor said the suspect’s life was in danger because of angry residents.

The court then directed that the suspected be remanded at Wote Police Station in Makueni as she awaits completion of the investigation.

The case will be mentioned on October 23, 2020.
