Major water shortage hits Nairobi CBD

The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company has cut off water supply to the entire Nairobi Central Business District to allow for repairs.

The company said in a statement posted online on Wednesday that the supply cut would allow its team to repair water pipes that had been damaged by contractors working on the expressway.

“Water supply to the entire CBD has been shut down due to a pipe damage by the Express Way Contractor. The line has been shut to pave way for repairs,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the company has urged city residents to be patient as efforts to restore supply begin.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) claims that once completed, the Nairobi Expressway will reduce travel time from Westlands to JKIA to 15 minutes during peak hours.

Previously, the 27.1-kilometer commute would take about 2 hours during rush hour.

The expressway, according to the PDU, will ‘improve Nairobi’s competitiveness as a regional hub by decongesting the CBD and Northern transport corridor.’

Mlolongo, SGR, JKIA, Eastern and Western bypasses, Capital Center, Haile Selassie, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru will be among the ten interchanges on the expressway.

According to the PDU, the expressway has provided over 200 jobs for Kenyans as well as markets for locally produced goods.

The expressway is expected to boost the economy by reducing traffic delays and lowering transportation costs.
