Major Peter Mugure to be arraigned over murder of estranged wife, two children

Major Peter Mugure, the key suspect in the murder of a Kayole woman and her two children, is expected to be arraigned in court where police will likely seek more time to hold him pending conclusion of investigations.

Bodies believed to be of Major Mugure’s estranged wife Joyce Syombua (31) and children; Shanice Maua (10) and Prince Michael (5), were on Saturday discovered at Makaburini in Thingithu area, approximately 9-minutes away from the Laikipia Air Base, with the children stacked on top of their mother.

Detectives from the Serious Crimes Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since taken over investigations into the grisly murder.

The detectives started their work at the County Referral Hospital mortuary before proceeding to Makaburini in Thingithu ward, Nanyuki town.

The area where the bodies were exhumed was cordoned off with police on guard to keep the public away from the crime scene.

Samples collected from the scenes they visited are expected to be subjected to forensic analysis.

A 21-year-old male casual labourer at the senior officers’ mess in the Laikipia Airbase identified as Collins Pamba is alleged to have aided the prime suspect, Major Mugure, in burying the bodies of the three late in the night.

Collins led the detectives to Thingithu area where he pointed out the exact spot where the bodies were exhumed.

The area in which the bodies were found is an open field, but residents claim insecurity in the area could have given the suspects confidence to bury the three without fear someone would see them.

Joyce Syombua’s family, although devastated, is waiting for direction from the DCI on when to travel to Nanyuki for identification of the bodies and post mortem.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor is also expected in Nanyuki for the exercise.

In Kayole, a house in which relatives of Major Mugure are said to have been living remains deserted as neighbors said the inhabitants left on Saturday for an unknown destination.
