President Uhuru Kenyatta, in his address to the nation on Wednesday, directed that all basic education in the country resumes in January next year.

Speaking at State House in Nairobi, President Kenyatta however noted that learners who already reported back to schools and resumed education activities should continue.

“With respect to the examination classes that have already resumed learning, I hereby order that they continue with their learning and examination preparations but under heightened health safety measures, and also order that all basic education classes resume in-person learning in January 2021,” he said.

The Head of State also urged Members of Parliament for the respective constituencies to ensure provision of hand washing stations, face masks and sanitizers to all schools ahead of the resumption.

“I urge and encourage MPs to engage their respective NGAAF and CDF boards with a view of finding way to augment the existing interventions that are geared towards reopening of our schools,” he stated.

“I urge them to make investments that focus on additional hand washing points in our schools, on provision of face masks to our children, on general sanitization as well as physical distancing of students and teachers.”
