KU active shooter training terrorism drill

It’s been six months since the government directed universities and other institutions of higher learning to develop programs to train students on how to respond during terror situations.
Kenyatta University is now the first public university to roll out a program to train students on how to respond during terror situations.
Following the terror attack at Garrissa University which claimed the lives of 147 students, there was need to review the security situation in all institutions of higher learning.
The Education Cabinet Secretary Professor Jacob Kaimenyi said, “Without a secure environment no meaningful teaching and learning can go on.”
Kenyatta University is the first institute of higher learning that has taken the step to train its students on active shooter or terrorism.
Some of the drills issued at the shooter training included:
1. If you find yourself in a terrorist attack quickly silence your phones not to attract attention
2. Determine the most reasonable way to protect yourself is run towards an accessible escape route.
3. It is also important to evacuate by running regardless of whether or not others agree to follow you and ensure you leave your belongings and keep your hands visible so that the police or rescue forces can see you don’t mean any harm.
4. If evacuation is not possible find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you by making sure you are out of the shooter’s view.
5. Incase there is a room get in and lock the doors and remain quiet
6. Lastly if evacuation and hiding are not possible, as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger try to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter by acting aggressively, throwing items and improvising weapons.
