Ksh.5B dam to boost water supply in Mt Kenya region

The government has commenced the construction of a mega dam in Mt Kenya Forest whose water is expected to serve Laikipia, Nyeri and Meru counties.

The dam is expected to cost Ksh.5 billion and is projected to serve over 100,000 people directly. The dam is part of the government’s intended construction of 56 other dams across the country by 2022.

Winnie Guchu, the Chief Administrative Secretary for Water and her Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu joined the Laikipia county administration and engineers from the Water Resources Management Authority in touring the construction site along the Likii North River, Mt Kenya National Park.

Guchu noted that the government is dedicated to actualise the project which has been in the planning stages for the last four years.

She said that the mega dam will hold 5.5 million cubic meters of runoff water for use during the dry spell to downstream users in the three counties.

The CAS said that millions of liters of water were causing havoc in most parts of the country during heavy rains and the government intends to construct the dams to mitigate the flooding situation.

The construction, she noted will start once public participation through public barazas is done.

Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi noted that after the dam is complete Nanyuki Water and Sewarage Company will expand its treatment and sanitation works to cater for the huge volumes of water.
