Kisumu still leading as Kenya records 383 new COVID-19 cases; positivity rate at 9.7%

The Ministry of Health on Saturday announced that 383 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 3,930 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now 9.7%, as total confirmed infections rose to 172,325 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,830,686.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, in a statement to newsrooms, said 33 patients recovered from the coronavirus disease; 18 were discharged from various health facilities countrywide, while 15 are from the Home Based and Isolation Care Program. Total recoveries now stand at 117,502.

CS Kagwe however also noted that 24 people succumbed to COVID-19, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting Facility Record Audits on diverse dates in the month of April and May. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 3,264.

From the new, cases 377 are Kenyans while 6 are foreigners; 234 are males and 149 females, while the youngest is a seven-day-old infant and the oldest is 96 years.

The case were distributed across various counties as follows: Kisumu 54, Nairobi 53, Kisii 37, Kilifi 33, Kericho 29, Uasin Gishu 22, Migori 19, Siaya 17, Busia 15, Nandi 14, Homa Bay 12, Nyamira 12, Bomet 10, Nakuru 10, Kiambu 8, Bungoma 5, Vihiga 5, Machakos 4, Nyeri 3, Makueni 3, Mandera 3, Embu 2, Narok 2, Kajiado 2, Garissa 1, Kakamega 1, Kirinyaga 1, Kitui 1, Marsabit 1, Trans Nzoia 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Turkana 1 and West Pokot 1.

In Kisumu, the 54 cases are from Kisumu Central (27), Kisumu East (14), Kisumu West (11), Nyakach and Seme (1) case each.

In Nairobi, the 53 cases are from Kibra, Ruaraka and Westlands (5) cases each, Dagoretti North, Langata and Makadara (4) cases each, Kamukunji, Kasarani, Mathare, Embakasi East and Roysambu (3) cases each, Dagoretti South, Embakasi Central, Embakasi North, Embakasi South and Starehe (2) cases each, Embakasi West (1).

In Kisii, the 37 cases are from Kitutu Chache South (17), Nyaribari Chache (7), Kitutu Chache North (4), Bobasi and Bomachoge Chache (3), Bonchari (2), South Mugirango (1).

“A total of 1,184 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,942 patients are under the Home Based Isolation and Care Program,” stated CS Kagwe.

“101 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 23 of whom are on ventilatory support and 60 on supplemental oxygen. 18 patients are on observation. Another 95 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 88 of them in general wards and 7 in High Dependency Units (HDU).”

The CS added that a total of 975,265 persons have so far been vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease countrywide.

Of these 295,486 are aged 58 years and above; others 277,776; health workers 166,199; teachers 153,089; while security officers 82,720.

A total of 6,622 people have received their second dose. Of these 4,046 are health workers; others 1,101; aged 58 years and above 709; teachers 445; while security officers 321.
