Kisumu County becomes second assembly to ratify BBI bill

The county assembly of Kisumu became the second county assembly after Siaya to pass the constitutional ammendment bill popularly known as BBI bill.

The move comes just a day after the High Court blocked the IEBC from subjecting the Bill to a referendum before petitions challenging the Bill are heard and determined.

The bill was also tabled before two other counties of Mombasa and Nakuru for debate.

But even as counties continue to pass the bill, legal teams representing BBI proponents must convince the five judge bench on 17 issues in the seven consolidated petitions.

During the Tuesday afternoon session attended by majority of Kisumu MCAs and members of the public, the committee of Justice and Legal affairs chaired by East Seme MCA Seth Okumu tabled the report.

The assembly members voted by acclamation after unanimously adopting the bill.

Assembly Speaker Elisha Oraro said he will immediately write to the Speakers of both the National Assembly and the Senate notifying them of the decision of the County Assembly of Kisumu.

Chairman of the justice and legal affairs committee Seth Okumu applauded the MCAs for moving fast to pass the bill noting that they should now embark on popularizing it through civic education.
