Kirubi, Sportpesa top Google search trending list

Most Kenyans online this month searched for news on business mogul Chris Kirubi and how to sign up for gaming platform SportPesa, Google has revealed.

The company’s survey of top trending searches shows rising curiosity about Mr. Kirubi, whose health has been in question since he travelled to the U.S. in November last year.

A photo of the ailing billionaire emerged online two weeks ago sending the online fraternity into a frenzy.

Also top of the list was British Physicist Stephen Hawking, who died after battling with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for 50 years, the statement from Google said.

Other famous personalities on the list include former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who was fired while in Kenya, comedian Eric Omondi, Italian footballer David Astori and besieged Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula.

The lecturers strike and the UEFA Champions league were also of interest to many. ‘How to register SportPesa’ emerged top in the trending ‘How to’ category, Google said, adding that ‘How to delete a Facebook account’ came second.

This follows the expose on marketing and research firm Cambridge Analytica that revealed use of personal information from Facebook users in influencing elections around the world.

Other trending topics in March include ‘How to play lotto’, ‘How to stop masturbation’ and ‘How to lose belly fat faster’.
