Kenyans push for Bobi Wine release, plan protest in Nairobi

Kenyans have joined their Ugandan counterparts in demanding for the release of MP Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

In a show of solidarity, a concert has been organized for Wednesday in Nairobi and thereafter a peaceful protest at Freedom Corner.

“On Wednesday 22nd August, 5pm, . On Thursday 23rd August, a peaceful protest by active citizens in Kenya to and . Meet up: Freedom Corner, Uhuru Park, 9am. See you there,” Boniface Mwangi, an activist said on Twitter.

Bobi Wine was arrested on August 13 and initially charged with treason.

The charges were later reduced to illegal possession of firearms and ammunition at a military court in Gulu, northern Uganda.

Bobi Wine, who is the MP for Kyadondo East, was remanded in Makindye Military Barracks after facing the charges.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that he has sustained serious head injuries and bone fractures at the barracks.

Kenyans online have expressed their solidarity with Ugandans in the fight for Bobi Wine’s release.

Sauti Sol, a popular Kenyan band; Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), and activist Boniface Mwangi are among those who have joined the #FreeBobiWine social media movement.

On Monday August 20, Ugandans took to the streets of Kampala to protest the politician/singer’s detention, chanting his slogan,’People power. Our power’.

The protesters pointed fingers at the Ugandan government  for arresting and torturing Bobi Wine among others who were arrested in Arua on Monday last week.
