Kenyan pilot Subow Mohamed Ahmed arrested over Ksh.39B fake arms deal

Subow Mohamed Ahmed, a Kenyan pilot working with a local aviation company, has been arrested over the Ksh.39billion fake arms deal.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspect was arrested by detectives based at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The arrest was reported to be on the strength of a stop order issued by DCI Headquarters Investigations Bureau.

Ahmed has been linked to the fake arms deal involving former Sports CS Rashid Echesa and three other suspects who were arraigned in court and charged.

Echesa was arraigned alongside Daniel Otieno Omondi alias General Juma, Clifford Okoth Onyango alias Paul, and Kennedy Oyoo Mboya on February 17, 2020.

They were charged with attempting to obtain a total of Ksh.39,544,200,000 from a foreigner by falsely pretending that they would award a tender by the State Department to supply military equipment.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to all counts – obtaining money by false pretenses, conspiracy to commit a felony, uttering a false document – with Echesa terming the case a political witch hunt.

They were freed on a Ksh.3 million bond with a surety of a similar amount or a Ksh.1 million cash bail each after denying fraud charges in a military arms deal.

The fake arms scandal also implicated a security officer from the office of the Deputy President who was later found dead at his house in Imara Daima estate.

CCTV footage from the Harambee Annex office suggests that the deceased officer— Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei—was part of the fake military equipment tender.

The surveillance footage released on March 5 by DCI George Kinoti showed a timeline of events on the day Echesa staged a meeting at the office to finalise the dubious deal.
