Kenya loses senior surgeon Daniel Alushula to COVID-19

The Kenyan medical fraternity has lost another doctor Daniel Alushula to COVID-19.

According to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Dr. Alushula  worked as a senior surgeon in Busia County.

“The medical profession is mourning the death of a Senior Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Daniel Alushula due to COVID-19 complications. The deceased was working at Busia County Referral Hospital,” KMPDU said on Twitter.

He is also said to have been offering health services at his private facility in Kakamega.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said the death of Dr lushula has robbed Kenyans of a renowned Orthopedic surgeon whose medical services have saved many lives.

Oparanya mourned the surgeon as a competent, diligent & humble doctor who devoted his life to saving lives and serving people.

Former KMPDU Chair Dr. Ouma Oluga said: “You did your work on earth with passion. Going beyond the call of duty to treat trauma and orthopedic patients with dedication. You actively participated in our quest to reform the system. We shall miss you. Deep condolences to your family and fraternity.”

Bernard Chitunga said the death of Dr Daniel Alushula has robbed his hometown of Kakamega a renowned Orthopedic surgeon.

One Beatrice Mugure said: “Met him briefly in 2015 while at Alupe. Industrious surgeon and involved unionist” while Kiptoo Wanjala said he touched the lives of us at Busia KMTC too.

Dr. Thuranira Kaugiria, the secretary general of KMPDU’s Nairobi branch, said: “Such a sad day for doctors. We have lost another senior doctor to COVID-19 today. I am done. It is not okay when @NMS_Kenya deny doctors a medical cover and result to issuing show cause letters.”

Kenya lost its first doctor to COVID-19 in July; Dr. Doreen Adisa Lugaliki died four days after being admitted to hospital.

Another doctor, Dr. Yussuf Abdi who worked as a senior public health officer in Wajir County succumbed to COVID-19 during the same month.

In early August, a nurse in Homabay also passed away after battling coronavirus in an Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. Ndambuki Mboloi, a senior pulmonologist, passed away on August 13.

According to KMPDU, the political leadership of the country is failing health care workers on the fight against COVID-19.

“Frontline Healthcare workers are undergoing immense suffering just to access healthcare services, non- remittance of deducted NHIF dues is rampant in most counties,” said Dr. Chibanzi Mwachonda, KMPDU Acting Secretary General.
