IPOA launches probe after woman dies from stray bullet fired by police officer

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman in downtown Nairobi.

Jackline Mugure Maina was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer attached to the Kamukunji Police Station who was chasing a notorious robber fleeing on foot.

Even with investigations underway, the family is however raising concerns about police officers trying to cover up the shooting incident.

The family of Jackline arrived at the City Mortuary early Monday morning to witness the post mortem examination of their kin who was hit by a stray bullet while heading home in a tuktuk; an incident that has left them with more questions than answers.

“We wonder mbona askari afanye kitu kama hiyo na hiyo ni place iko na watu wengi…tunaomba tu justice,” said Mary Maina, friend to the deceased.

The deceased’s husband – Ken Ngugi – who is yet to come to terms with the tragic incident said what appears to be a plot by police officers to cover up for their colleague who was involved in the shooting hurts even more.

According to a police statement, the deceased was allegedly stabbed by the robber who was being pursed.

An autopsy report however revealed that the deceased died due to exsanguination after a bullet exited through her neck. The bullet was recovered from her scapular and will be used in investigations.

The incident has yet again raised questions on training of security forces on the handling of firearms in crowded places.

In March 2020, the shooting in Kiamaiko estate, Nairobi, of a 13-year old boy who was on a third floor balcony caused public outrage.
