IEBC suspends Rongai MP elections after ballot paper mix-up

Voters cast their ballots at the Mercy Njeri Primary school in Rongai Constituency, Nakuru County, where missing ballot boxes and papers led to suspension of the MP elections.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has suspended Parliamentary elections for Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County after a mix-up in the ballot papers.

Nakuru County IEBC manager Joseph Mele on Tuesday morning confirmed the suspension.

At the Mercy Njeri Primary school polling station, there were missing ballot boxes and papers for the MP seat.

Youth took to the streets to protest the suspension, barricading roads and burning tyres.

Incumbent Rongai MP Raymond Moi condemned the Wafula Chebukati-led electoral commission for the gaffe, labelling it a demonstration of “incompetence” and unpreparedness for the elections.

“The candidates who were vying to be members of parliament for Rongai were not on the ballot papers… This is amazing and incredible because on many occasions, Chebukati has assured Kenyans that he is ready to run these elections but that does not seem to be the case. I am very astonished,” he said.

Mr. Moi was one of the three candidates in the Rongai parliamentary contest.

“If they schedule the elections for another day, the turnout will be low and will will not be on the same playing field… that will affect the outcome,” he added.
