IEBC approves BBI signature collection form

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has released a template form that will be used in the collection of at least 1 million signatures of registered voters to endorse the Buiding Bridges Initiative (BBI).

All Kenyans who will sign the BBI signature collection form are required to indicate their name, ID/Passport number and the County, Constituency and Ward from which they hail from.

They will also provide their phone number, the name of the polling station where they are registered, email address and lastly their signature.

“The Commission takes note of your request for guidance as well as approval of your proposed format and provides to you the approved format/template (copy enclosed herewith) that should be used for collection of signatures.  To enable the voter verification process and to ensure completeness of the supporters’ records. all the fields in the said approved format/template should be duly filled as provided,” said IEBC in a letter to the BBI National Secretariat.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner, ODM leader Raila Odinga are expected to launch the signature collection drive on Wednesday, November 25 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

On Monday the Joint Secretaries of the National BBI Secretariat Dennis Waweru and Junet Mohamed said they look forward to collecting as many as 4 million signatures, way above the required 1 million threshold.

Once verified by IEBC, only 1 million signatures are required to push the Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2020 to the next stage where at least 24 county assemblies must approve the process for Kenyans to determine the fate of the proposed changes through a referendum.

The signature collection exercise, according to the BBI secretariat,  will take one week across the country.
