Hassan Omar picks Linda Shuma as running mate
Wiper Party Secretary General Omar Hassan on Monday picked Linda Shuma to be his running mate in his bid to replace Governor Hassan Joho in Mombasa County.
Senator Omar seemed to have settled on Ms Linda Shuma partly due to her corporate leadership experience having served as the President of the Lions Club, Mombasa Bahari.
The Mombasa Senator is the only candidate in the county’s gubernatorial race to pick a female running mate.
The outspoken Mombasa Senator described women as shrewd leaders who need to be availed opportunities to actualize their visions for the country.
“Women are in the front line of demonstrations for better governance. It is true that when you see women in any demonstration or movement know that it is for good cause,” said the Wiper Secretary General.
Senator Omar is facing stiff competition from the incumbent Governor Hassan Joho who has been depicted as the candidate to beat in the race by several opinion polls.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party deputy party leader was given a direct ticket to defend his seat and settled on his County Secretary Francis Thoya as his running mate after falling out with deputy governor Hazel Katana, who has since decamped to Jubilee Party.
Omar has accused Governor Joho of denying the people of Mombasa the fruits of devolution through poor governance and has promised to lead a fair administration that will represent the ethnic and cultural diversity of the coastal city.
Jubilee Party has fielded businessman Suleiman Shahbal for the seat with former Kisauni MP Anania Mwamboza as his running mate.
Omar will also be facing his former Wiper comrade – Nyali MP Hezron Awiti, who is vying on a Vibrant Democratic Party ticket with Hassan Mwamtoa as the running mate.
