GSU officer shot at Wilson Airport detained for 14 days

A General Service Unit (GSU) police officer manning Wilson Airport was on Tuesday detained for 14 days by a Nairobi court over alleged terrorism links.

An Anti-Terrorism Police Investigator applied to hold the suspect – Samson Morongo Nesco – pending investigations into alleged terror activities as well as the murder of his colleague.

Constable Morongo and his colleague Constable Stephen Mukangi were on duty at the Wilson Airport on Saturday night when two men masquerading as police officers approached them claiming to be in need of their assistance.

According to investigators, the two attackers, who were dressed in police uniform, asked the two GSU officers to help them attend to a vehicle which had mechanical problem along the Southern bypass.

As they were walking towards the scene, two other men also dressed in police attire emerged from a nearby bush, triggering a shootout that left Constable Mukangi dead.

Investigators added that, according to Constable Morongo, the four attackers were terrorists and that they took away their two AK47 riffles loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition each.

Morongo further claimed that he managed to escape with a gunshot wound to the leg but that his colleague was killed by the attackers.

The investigators told Milimani Court Magistrate Muthoni Nzibe that the case is complicated hence they need more time to investigate and determine the truth.

The matter will be mentioned on August 12, 2019.
