Funds for public schools to be released on Thursday, needy students to receive free masks- CS Magoha

The government will issue free face-masks to needy students and pupils, Education Ministry Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said.

At the same time, he urged parents and teachers to ensure that other students have bought theirs when school resumes.

The Education Ministry boss was speaking at the Kisumu National Polytechnic on Wednesday during a tour to ascertain whether the institution is ready for the phased reopening.

He said the decision to reopen the school for the three classes will be used as a guideline in observing how the situation unfolds.

He said that if the model works, the Ministry will conduct thorough consultations after which all classes will resume in-person learning.

During the tour, Prof. Magoha also said that the government will be disbursing the funds for free learning to schools from Thursday.

Magoha also confirmed that there is a matter on the reopening of schools pending in court, saying that everyone is free to move to court on any matter.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Prof. Magoha said the progressive re-opening will begin with students in Grade 4, Class Eight and Form Four who are expected back to school from Monday, October 12.

Class Eight and Form Four students will sit their KCPE and KCSE exams in March 2021.

According to an exam calendar released by the Ministry of Education, the KCPE exam will be conducted for three days between March 22-March 24, 2021 while the Form Four candidates are set to write their KCSE test from March 25- April 16, 2021.

The students returning to school on Monday will continue with learning until December 23, 2020, when the second term will come to an end before proceeding for a one-week Christmas break.

According to a revised school calendar released by the Ministry, Term 3 begins on January 4, 2021 to March 19, 2021.

As the students return to class, the Ministry has instructed all schools to ensure mandatory use of face masks, monitoring of the body temperature for all learners, staff and all other persons accessing the schools, handwashing and observance of high levels of hygiene.

Where there is no running water, schools have been advised to ensure sanizers are available.

Regarding social distancing, the Education CS says: “Although physical distancing will remain a challenge, it should not be used as a bottleneck to keep any child away from school.”
