Governors Sonko and Mutua ugly war

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his Machakos counterpart Alfred Mutua are embroiled in a political fight over the state of affairs in their respective counties.

The two governors invaded each other’s territories to try and resolve issues bedeviling their counties.

It is a fight one would easily equate to seeing the spec in your neighbour’s eyes and forgetting the log in yours but the fights are getting dirty and personal.

The unflattering tiff was triggered by Machakos Governor’s decision to rehabilitate both the Dedan Kimathi and Tom Mboya statues in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Mutua on a charm offensive was least impressed on how these priceless statues of Kenya’s heroes have been neglected with dirt visible all around.

“These statues have not been attended to and yet it costs millions of shillings to put them up,” said Governor Mutua.

In a veiled jab directed at Nairobi’s leadership, Mutua attributed the neglect to leaders involved in propaganda campaigns, keen on acquisition of power and self-enrichment instead of delivering service.

Mutua on Tuesday would even vow to personally repair and maintain the statues of Kenya’s heroes.

Sonko was not amused by Mutua’s assertions, he dispatched a team to the two sites and they started work to return them to their former glory.

Sonko was not done, on Thursday he decided to take his fight to Mutua’s backyard.

True to his nature, Sonko was in Machakos County to help bail out staff of Macha Beach Club that were arrested by Machakos County Government officers on Wednesday.

The hotel is owned by his ally Kalembe Ndile.

Sonko told off Mutua accusing him of failing to address the vital needs of Machakos residents.

“Konza City should have been contracted to the youth to build, this would have created employment for them,” said Sonko.

But Sonko’s maybe a case of misplaced priorities because as opposed to fixing the ailing Mbagathi hospital in his own turf, Sonko with his rescue team complete with paramedics were also in tow and rescued a sick woman in the streets of Machakos town to take her to Nairobi hospital.

Whereas this may seemingly look like a petty fight, but it would not escape observers that two are keen on the Presidential race in 2022.
