Governor Alfred Mutua: Why I oppose DP Ruto impeachment plot

Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua on Wednesday opposed an alleged plot by a section of opposition leaders to table a motion for the impeachment of Deputy President William Ruto.

Speaking on Citizen T.V’s Jeff Koinange Live, Governor Mutua stated that he wants fair grounds for the 2022 presidential race during which he intends to floor DP Ruto.

“I don’t agree with the whole idea of impeaching William Ruto; first of all, I don’t think it could succeed because we also don’t want to destabilize the country,” said Mutua.

“But also because I want to be given a chance to beat him fairly in 2022 when I run for president.”

The Machakos county chief expressed confidence at clinching the country’s top seat in the next general election, adding that “… if you see me on the ballot in 2022, which I plan to be, it will mean that I am winning; It will mean that I will win, I don’t go into things blindly.”

He also rubbished claims purported in a viral letter that the Machakos County government would not pay it’s staff without registering for the newly launched National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) and submitting their Huduma Namba.

Mutua termed the letter – which was allegedly signed by Public Service and Quality Management Chief Officer Joseph Ochwada – as fake saying his government was not in support of the message communicated therein.

“This letter is not an approved letter; it is not authorized; it is not a letter that we’re aware of. I’ve asked my officers about it and they’ve said they don’t know where it came from, so I’ve launched investigations,” he said.

“This is a policy decision, and policy decisions are made by the cabinet; we’ve not had a cabinet decision made about this issue at all. So disregard the letter.”

The governor added that: “This (Huduma namba) is important but it should not be forced down the throats of anybody. People will come and join in when they see it’s importance.”

Mutua further rubbished claims that his purported alliance with Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu and their Makueni counterpart Kivutha Kibwana was aimed at distorting Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s foothold in Ukambani.

“This (alliance) is for the economic development of our people,  whether that goes against somebody else is neither here nor there,” he said.

“What is important is that our people have wallowed in poverty for a long time and being told stories.”

The Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader also revealed that he had long submitted his relevant documents to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for the lifestyle audit, adding that President Uhuru Kenyatta recently informed him that he (Kenyatta) had as well.

He advised the judicial system to have clear predetermined periods for cases so as not to waste too much time, adding that public leaders implicated in graft should have their assets frozen.
