Gikomba traders barred from reconstructing following fire

Gikomba traders have been barred from reconstructing following the Thursday morning inferno that left 16 people dead and 70 others nursing serious burn injuries.

This is according to a directive reportedly issued on Saturday by the area chief asking them to suspend any rebuilding activities until Monday as some issues are being sorted out.

The 17 adjacent buildings that were largely affected by the explosion have been marked as unsafe for occupation.

The owners have therefore been asked to undertake sufficient renovations, which are currently ongoing, before they can be declared safe.

Traders have also called on the government to speed up investigations on the cause of the fire and to allow them reconstruct their yards.

Timber traders in the market now fear the directive could be an agenda to flush them out of the land on which their yards sit as it is a riparian of Nairobi River.
