Garissa: Police officer kills girlfriend, blows himself up with grenade

An officer attached to the Masalani Police Station in Garissa County reportedly stabbed his girlfriend to death before killing himself.

According to an eye witness’ account, the officer and his girlfriend were engaged in a heated argument before he stabbed her.

Upon coming to the realization of his actions, he then took his own life by detonating a hand grenade, thereby blowing himself up.

“Chances were that the officer resorted to committing suicide out of desperation or regret after realizing that the lady had bled to death owing to the physical injuries,” said Ijara sub-county Police Commander William Oyugi.

“The officer had burns all over his body caused by shrapnel from the explosive.”

Mr. Oyugi added that the couple had been having a rough relationship as the girlfriend had earlier fled with their kid accusing the cop of infidelity.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Mwingi mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
