Gachagua is not the same as he was: Mungatana on filing censure motion

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana speaks during Daybreak interview on September 26, 2024.

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has raised concerns over Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's change of character over time, depicting an individual that does not serve the country's interest as the second in command.

During an interview with Daybreak, the senator was asked why he filed a censure motion against the DP at a time when impeachment talks are gaining traction among his detractors, with some speculating that it would be filed in Parliament within two weeks.

The Senator elucidated that the censure motion had no ulterior motive to form a basis in ousting the deputy president from office. He noted that the motion only serves as a sign for the DP to realign his actions with the government's agenda.

"We were in South Africa for the African parliament session, we go there three times a year, I personally said after watching things unfold, that when I go home on Sunday, I'm filing (the censure motion)," he explained.

"There's no correlation really. But we also watched the interview, it wasn't a person who's a principal assistant to the president. I think something has gone off the road. The Gachagua off late is not the Gachagua we started with. So this censure motion is saying let us go back to the line."

In the motion, Senator Mungatana accused Gachagua of making utterances that divide Kenyans on tribal politics.

He added that the DP has also incited Kenyans to disregard directives from some county governments, hence demeaning the office he occupies.

According to Mungatana, the DP violated Article 75 of the Constitution, which requires state officers to act in ways that benefit the general public rather than personal interests.

"The Senate pursuant to the standing order 101 section 1, expresses its displeasure and disappointment with the conduct of Hon. Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President of Kenya and therefore we need to censure him", adds Mungatana in the motion.
