Former Raila aide Eliud Owalo resigns from ODM

Former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) strategist Eliud Owalo has resigned from the party citing personal reasons.

Mr. Owalo announced his resignation from ODM on Monday, saying his “political ideology, convictions and belief” are no longer in line with those of the party.

“It is with great regret that I write to inform you that I have with immediate effect relinquished my membership of the Orange Democratic Movement Party (ODM).

“My resignation is informed by the fact that my political ideology, convictions and belief no longer has convergence or depict any congruence and common denominator with that of the ODM Party; its value-orientation and practices,” said Owalo in a letter addressed to ODM and the registrar of political parties.

He further asked ODM to immediately remove his name from its register.

“Consequently, there is no iota of enthusiasm remaining in me to warrant my continued stay in the ODM Party; thereby necessitating my strategic exit from the Party by way of immediate resignation. I therefore request that you facilitate the instant removal of my name from the ODM Party Membership Register,” he said.

In the 2013 elections, Mr. Owalo, who runs a management consultant firm, worked as ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign manager.

He, however, fell out with Mr. Odinga in the run-up to the 2017 elections after he failed to get the ODM ticket to contest for the Kibra Parliamentary seat, which was won by the late Ken Okoth.

Speculations abound that Mr. Owalo could be preparing to vie for the Kibra MP seat which fell vacant after the passing of Ken Okoth.

At the same time, his resignation comes in the wake of reports that he is part of a 15-member political advisory team assembled by ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi ahead of the 2022 elections.
