Family of the late freedom fighter Paul Ngei in funds appeal for granddaughters heart surgery

The family of late Cabinet Minister Paul Ngei is in an urgent appeal for funds that will see his great grand-daughter Baby Petra Nthenya Soila undergo a heart surgery in India.

Petra was diagnosed with VSD and PDA with pulmonary hypertension (two holes in the heart) in January of this year and has been recommended for an open heart surgery at Miot Centre for Children’s Cardiac Care, India.

In order to secure the surgery, Petra’s grandmother Ruth Ngei, who is the daughter of the late Paul Ngei, says the family needs Ksh. 2million that will cater for the medical procedure in India.

“We have spent the last few months trying to raise money and we have received a few donations from well-wishers, but they have not been enough to meet the required amount. With the symptoms the baby has experienced the last few weeks, we don’t know if we can wait any longer. Timing is most essential at this point,” said Ruth Ngei.

Her doctor recommended that she get the surgery done to save her life.

“Due to the severity of the pulmonary pressures, we do not have the setting for the same open heart surgery in Kenya,” Dr Naomi Gachara, Paediatric Cardiologist at Kenyatta National Hospital said.

Petra, who is severely underweight because of her condition, also depends on supplements for her diet which are expensive.

The surgery is expected to help her lead a normal life and enroll in school for her education.
