Embu leaders target 300,000 in latest voter registration drive

Embu County leaders are targeting 300,000 fresh voters in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) mass registration drive starting Monday, January 16.

The leaders have urged residents to pick up their uncollected their Identity Cards, estimated at about 100,000, saying that these numbers would boost the region’s numbers come the August 8 election date.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora, Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire and Manyatta MP John Muchiri all said that they shall map out an mobilisation plan for the county.

Wambora emphasised on the need to partner with the government to ensure that ID collection is done seamlessly, so that youth can register in numbers as the IEBC process starts.

Muchiri, who is also Jubilee’s Embu County campaigns coordinator, asked leaders to put aside their political differences and work together to ensure that youth register in numbers ahead of the polls.

Mbarire affirmed her commitment, saying leaders from the region would work together to get resident to register.

“We have over 100,000 unregistered voters, and we are sure if we work hard, we could reach over 400,000. We will go out mobilizing people to register, and especially young voters. We must ensure IDs lying in the offices get to their rightful owners so that we increase the basket of voters and have bargaining power with Jubilee government,” she said.

This move comes a day after the Independent Electoral Boundaries and Commission made an appeal to various stakeholders to encourage Kenyans to come out and register as voters.
